Slight petrol price decrease for SA

Cape Town - The retail petrol price will dip by 10c a litre next Wednesday due to lower international prices, the energy department said on Friday.

The price of 95 grade petrol in Gauteng will drop slightly to R12.10/l, while at the coast it will cost R11.75/l. However, the wholesale diesel price will go up to R11.44.

The price of 0.05% sulphur diesel will be 10.2c/l higher, while that of 0.005% sulphur diesel will rise by 9.2c/l.

The petrol price breather follows last month's 23c/l increase and this year's highest single price hike of 93c/l in August.

Meanwhile, despite high petrol prices the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Naamsa) on Friday said that total new vehicle sales rose by 10.5% year-on-year (y/y) in October to 57 845 units.

Naamsa said the increase was partly boosted by record low interest rates.

Exports of locally produced vehicles however fell by 3.3% y/y in October, as the transport strike caused disruption at various manufacturing plants and affected output and exports during the month.

While relatively lower lending rates were boosting domestic sales, rising inflationary pressures and a weaker rand could push vehicle prices unsustainably higher, weighing on demand for the remainder of the year and in 2013, reports Reuters.

Meanwhile, the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will increase by 4c to R8.70/l.
The maximum retail price for liquid petroleum gas will increase by 1c per kilogram.

Fuel Price drops by 85 cents in SA

The latest fuel price decrease may not bring as much relief to consumers, an independent consumer activist said on Tuesday.

The price of petrol dropped by 85 cents a litre at midnight; the biggest decrease of the year.

Consumer activist Ina Wilken told Eyewitness News that despite the decrease, everything else still costs more.

Wilken said things will not get easier for the consumer any time soon.

“It’s a very difficult time for consumers to even try to save and the problem is the ongoing increase in fuel and the high electricity prices.

“Everything is just increasing all the time.”

Food prices

Wilken confirmed there are no decreases when the fuel price drops.

“The problem is the moment the petrol price increases everything else increases but the retailers just couldn’t be bothered – they’ve already added it to their product and they don’t bother bringing it down.”

The new price of 95 grade petrol in Gauteng fell to R10,82 rand/litre, while the wholesale diesel price decreased by 5.9 percent to R10.11 rand/litre.

Food prices

Wheat farmers in the Overberg claimed that food prices are out of their control as wheat production remains costly.

It is unlikely the latest fuel price drop will see the price of products on the shop shelves decrease.

Riviersonderend farmer Schalk Viljoen said the fuel price will need to drop even more before it has any significant impact.

“We must remember that fuel prices increased tremendously over the past three months.

“The fuel price might be coming down but it is still high and I don’t foresee that we can produce cheaper in the near future.”

Viljoen said the bread price might even go up.

“Bread prices will probably increase because internationally higher wheat prices make our prices go up as well and that‘s because of the panic state in America due to the drought.”

SA petrol price decrease on Wed 06 jun

The price of all grades of petrol will decrease by 55 cents a litre next week, the energy department said on Friday.

A litre of 95 ULP (unleaded petrol) in Gauteng will cost R11.67 from next Wednesday, June 6.

The price of diesel with a 0.05 sulphur content will decrease by 24.82 cents a litre. Diesel with a 0.005 percent sulphur content will also decrease by the same amount.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will drop by 21 cents a litre.

The single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will decrease by 28 cents a litre, and the maximum retail price for LP Gas by 99 cents a kilogram.

The average international prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin had decreased, the energy department said.
